October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, a time to recognize families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. Although these losses are common, many people continue to grieve quietly.

Pregnancy loss is not only the loss of a pregnancy. It may also represent the loss of a hoped-for future, an anticipated identity, and milestones already imagined.

Why Pregnancy Loss Can Feel Invisible

People often receive clear support after a publicly recognized death. Pregnancy and infant loss may be treated differently, especially when the loss occurred early or the pregnancy had not been announced. Others may avoid the topic because they do not know what to say. Some offer reassurance through statements like, “you can try again” or “everything happens for a reason.” Even when well-intentioned, these comments can minimize the relationship and dreams connected to the baby.

This experience is sometimes called disenfranchised grief, meaning grief that is not fully recognized or supported by others. Your grief does not require anyone else’s permission. A loss can be profound regardless of when it occurred or whether others understood its significance.

There Is No Correct Way to Grieve

Grief after pregnancy or infant loss can include sadness, anger, guilt, anxiety, numbness, confusion, or even moments of joy. These emotions may shift quickly or appear unexpectedly. You may function well for weeks and then feel overwhelmed by a due date, medical appointment, pregnancy announcement, or holiday. This does not mean you are moving backward. Grief often returns in waves as you encounter new reminders of what was lost.

Some people want to talk about their baby. Others prefer to grieve through prayer, writing, ritual, or quiet reflection. Healing does not require forgetting, “moving on,” or grieving in a way that makes others comfortable.

When Grief and Trauma Overlap

Pregnancy or infant loss can involve trauma alongside grief. This may include receiving devastating news, undergoing an emergency procedure, experiencing physical pain, feeling dismissed by providers, or fearing for your own safety.

Afterward, the nervous system may remain on alert. You might experience intrusive memories, nightmares, panic, emotional numbness, avoidance of medical settings, or intense fear during a future pregnancy. These responses do not mean you are grieving incorrectly. They may indicate that your brain and body are still processing an overwhelming experience. EMDR therapy can provide space to address both the loss and the traumatic circumstances surrounding it.

Responding to Guilt and “What If” Thoughts

After loss, the mind often searches for an explanation. You may replay memories, thoughts, decisions, or moments when you wonder whether you should have done something differently. Blaming yourself can create the illusion that the outcome could have been controlled. However, self-blame is not the same as responsibility. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists explains that early pregnancy loss is usually caused by circumstances outside a person’s control.

When guilt arises, ask yourself:

“Am I judging my past self, using information I only learned afterward?”

“What would I say to someone I love if they experienced this?”

Creating Space for Remembrance

Continuing to love and remember your baby can be part of healing. Some people light a candle, write a letter, keep a meaningful object, plant something, create art, or include their baby in prayer/spiritual practices.

October 15 is recognized as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Many families participate in the Wave of Light by lighting a candle in remembrance. However, there is no obligation to participate publicly. The most meaningful ritual is one that reflects your values, culture, faith, and relationship with your baby.

How EMDR Therapy May Help

EMDR therapy may help when traumatic parts of a loss continue to feel emotionally present. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It helps the brain work through distressing memories so they feel less intense and no longer affect you as strongly in the present.

EMDR does not erase memories, remove love, or rush grief. It may reduce the intensity of intrusive images, guilt, medical trauma, or fear related to another pregnancy. Treatment should move at a pace that respects your emotional capacity, physical recovery, culture, and grieving process.

Finding Support After Loss

Support may come from a trusted friend, family, faith community, medical provider, therapist, or group of people with similar experiences. Postpartum Support International offers support groups for bereaved parents.

Your loss deserves to be acknowledged. Support cannot change what happened, but it can help you carry your grief with greater compassion and connection. Schedule a consultation to learn how grief counseling and EMDR therapy may support your healing.
